Yesterday the team finished a busy schedule of evangelism, and so as we near the end of the missions’ trip, the foreign members of our team traveled to Cape Coast for some sight seeing and relaxation at the beach. Nine of the team members from USA and Canada along with Daniel the driver and host, left early to drive the mission van to the coast. We arrived at Elmina in the early afternoon, where we visited a 500-year-old slave castle. The tour was interesting and informative but too emotional for at least one team member who choose rather to wait outside than to view the horrors of slavery. The slave trade ceased long ago, but the atrocity seems more real and current as one steps inside the rooms and halls of this old castle. It is such a striking contradiction to see a church chapel situated above an area that housed hundreds of slaves in deplorable and inhumane conditions.
While most of the team were busy exploring the slave castle Daniel was able to meet with some children while waiting outside. Sharing wristbands with the children and explaining the gospel gave opportunity to get to know these children, who make the slave castle a hangout and beg for help from the tourists. Due to this they are not going to school and lack education. We noted that only one of the older children could manage to read, but very poorly. Mama Sarah took time to read through a gospel tract with children, and they followed along with keen interest.
After our visit at the slave castle we made our way to the Beach House Hotel near Elmina, and enjoyed a nice chicken dinner. The staff seems so friendly, and the rooms seem comfortable for our visit. Tomorrow we will spend a relaxing day enjoying the beach and resting after our busy past two weeks of laboring in the gospel.
